Mark Ryan

Mark believes in the experiential power of architecture. Through thoughtful planning and design, he believes architecture can play a powerful role in helping to shape positive outcomes. Known for strategic thinking and creative problem-solving, his portfolio contains a diverse array of award-winning projects that help reimagine how we work, learn, play, and engage our communities.

In just 10 years, Mark’s work has been recognized by the AIA’s Academy of Architecture for Justice three different times, with projects for Lane County, Oregon; San Francisco, California; and Johnson County, Kansas, all receiving Citation Awards, the highest award given by the Academy. Mark’s portfolio includes exemplary projects for troubled kids nationwide, and 13 of his 22 AIA design awards have come from the AIA Academy of Architecture for Justice. His contributions to housing for student-athletes at the University of Kansas and the Johnson County Youth and Family Services Center demonstrate his wide range of capabilities, all anchored in holistic solutions to challenging conditions.

In addition to the practice of architecture, Mark is also passionate about education. He has been teaching at Arizona State University since 2004 and frequently lectures on his work or as a visiting critic at institutions nationwide. He has served on the AIA Arizona Board since 2012, is the recipient of the Arizona Architects Medal, and in 2022, he was elevated to AIA Fellowship in the design category.
