A second chance: Curtis’ story and why we walk for heart health

June 20, 2025

We're designers—but we're also patients

As Treanor reflects on their annual Denver Heart Walk for the American Heart Association, Principal and Health Specialty Leader Curtis Hendershott is reminded just how personal the mission behind this event truly is.

Today, Curtis is an energetic, active healthcare designer—leading projects that impact communities and improve lives. But at age 42, his own life nearly changed in an instant.

“I wasn’t in terrible health,” Curtis reflects, “but I definitely wasn’t taking care of myself. I was busy, stressed, and like a lot of people in their 30s and 40s, I just didn’t make time to check in on my health.” When he began feeling chest discomfort after meals, he brushed it off. It wasn’t until he struggled to finish a short walk with his dog that he finally saw a doctor.

That decision likely saved his life.

A life-changing diagnosis

Curtis was diagnosed with a critical, triple blockage—commonly known as “the widowmaker.” He underwent emergency open-heart surgery the very next day at Rose Medical Center in Denver, where his wife, Tracee, was working at the time. Thanks to quick action and the extraordinary care of his medical team, Curtis made a full recovery.

Today, he celebrates his health. In February of 2025, he logged over 70 miles on the treadmill. He sees his doctor regularly, stays active, and remains committed to his care.

I’m one of the lucky ones. I avoided a heart attack because of the incredible work of caregivers and the progress of medical research. Many others are still here today for the same reasons.

Gratitude, purpose, and good health

It’s stories like Curtis’s that fuel Treanor’s dedication to designing healthcare spaces that support healing, resilience, and life-saving work. And it’s why participating in the Heart Walk means more than just putting on a red shirt and hitting the pavement.

In June of 2025, the Treanor team walked in Denver to raise funds for the American Heart Association’s critical programs, from CPR training to cutting-edge research. We walked for caregivers and patients like Curtis who benefit from life-saving care.

We’re proud to share that we exceeded our $1,500 fundraiser goal.

Together, we can find the extraordinary in the practical

From large hospital systems to small rural clinics, we seek meaningful work that impacts our communities and supports the level of care we seek for ourselves and our families.
