Giving first-year students social and academic support

UTSA’s newest residence hall, Guadalupe Hall, is dedicated to incoming freshmen and focuses on providing students with an affordable housing option supporting academic and social needs. Our team worked with Alamo Architects to perform a full program and design for this 100,000-square-foot, 372-bed residence hall.

Creating a sense of home

With an average community size of 35 residents, developing a sense of home has been at the heart of every design decision for this residence hall. The organization of these communities around social and academic cores fosters meaningful interactions between students that build relationships and support student success.

In addition to study spaces provided within each community, two of the floors feature academic resource centers with computers, mixed study alcoves, and a variety of furniture configurations for different types of studying needs. A multipurpose room on the ground floor can also be used for academic seminars. Directly outside of the multipurpose room are two desk areas that can be used for tutoring or meeting with professors.

A social hub for various interests that connect students

Several social amenities have been incorporated into the new residence hall to encourage student interaction. Each floor features a large lounge with an adjacent community kitchen. These lounges are organized to promote vertical connectivity between the communities. E-Gaming and fitness spaces have also been incorporated into the design, as well as a 1,500-square-foot coffee shop near the lobby. This new residence provides freshmen a dynamic support network with increased engagement that enhances residential experiences.
