Building a legacy
Michael Treanor founds Treanor Architects in Lawrence, Kansas. The two-person firm provided design and management services on a variety of community-based projects such as schools, churches, and industrial/office buildings.
The Kansas City, Missouri, office opened in 1996 to provide a presence on both sides of the Kansas/Missouri state line. Today, the office is located in the Crossroads Arts District, an eclectic community with boutique shops, restaurants, creative businesses, studios, art galleries, and entertainment venues.
The Topeka, Kansas, office opened in 1999, primarily to serve the preservation and restoration of the Kansas Statehouse. The office is located downtown right across the street from the Statehouse, situated within an area of core growth, commerce, diversity, and legislation.
In 2008, we merged with GLPM, a Lawrence firm with 25 people. This merger added the Science & Technology (now Higher Education) studio to the firm. We also expanded to add the Historic Preservation studio and the Interior Design studio (now a service integrated firmwide).
In 2010, the firm added Civil Engineering (now Site) as a new studio, providing services both to internal teams and external clients.
The Dallas, Texas, office opened in 2011 to allow an expansion of the firm’s services into Texas. This was significant with the economic status of the country and Texas flourishing despite the nationwide downturn.
In 2014, the firm added the Health studio with staff located in our Kansas City office.
The Atlanta, Georgia, office opened in 2015 to further expand the firm’s services in the southeast. The office is nestled in a vibrant community featuring cultural arts, cuisine, and an active music scene.
In 2016, we merged with with H+L Architecture, adding offices in Denver and Colorado Springs. The merger formed the new entity of TreanorHL and dramatically expanded the size of the Health studio. Additional studios added included Advanced Industries and PK-12 Education.
In 2016, Carey & Co. joined the firm. Adding this San Francisco-based architecture and preservation team allowed immediate expansion with prominent project experience and new client opportunities along the west coast.
In 2018, we acquired Hug & Associates, which is located in our the Atlanta office and specializes in Greek life projects in the southeast.
The Phoenix, Arizona, office opened in 2018 when AIA Fellow Mark Ryan joined our Justice studio as a principal and leader in design.
The Boise, Idaho, office opened in 2019 and primarily serves healthcare clients.
In 2021, we acquired San Francisco-based company The Stinnett Group. This expanded the Health studio’s reach along the west coast. Principal Tansy Bowermaster fostered the addition of our Vancouver office to further extend our reach for healthcare clients.
In 2022, the firm added an office location in Lexington, Kentucky, with two key staff additions in the Justice studio.
In 2023, McCoy Collaborative Preservation Architecture (“McCoy Collaborative”) joined our Historic Preservation studio. Nancy McCoy and Greg Johnston joined as principals, along with the rest of the McCoy Collaborative team, allowing the firm to better serve clients and expand capabilities in Texas and the southwest.
In 2024, TreanorHL changed its name to Treanor as part of a brand refresh. Treanor’s new brand identity reflects its history and acknowledges its summation of all other mergers, acquisitions, and organic growth that have made the firm what it is today.
