Growing demand for interventional procedures

Stanford Health Care (SHC) saw an upward trend for interventional procedures and that spurred their decision to construct a second Interventional CT procedure room to alleviate caseloads to their existing facilities.

Partnering with user groups

Our team carefully reviewed previous neighboring projects as well as the master plan for the area and made sure our project fit appropriately into the context of the department’s long-term vision. We also partnered directly with end users to proactively address evolving project requirements.

The user groups identified lessons learned, like heating and humidity controls, communications system, gas tanks transportation from their existing IR suite that were the driving points for the design. Since we were working in an older building, we also interviewed the Inspector of Record to understand unusual conditions that were encountered during construction and design of the first IR CT suite.

Evaluating existing conditions

There were some complicated existing conditions that needed careful investigation and unusual fire rated construction design solutions:

  • New lead shielding was required since the space being remodeled was not an imaging room previously.
  • The capacity of the existing floor structure and roof structure were studied as soon as the equipment was confirmed to determine if the structure was adequate or required reinforcement.
  • The house HVAC system was also reviewed, and it was confirmed that supplemental mechanical units were required as part of the project. We added a dedicated Air Handler unit to serve both the existing and the new IR CT suites to protect the procedure rooms from excessive heat and we added a humidifier to work in tandem with the cooling system.

Enhanced audio and visual capabilities for updated record-keeping policy

As construction neared completion, we enhanced the new suite’s audio and visual (AV) capabilities to ensure compliance with the updated record-keeping policy for surgical spaces. We engineered a custom rack frame to securely store AV equipment in both the existing and new areas—an essential upgrade since the previous setup lacked adequate support and the vendor did not offer a suitable accessory.

More flexibility for patients

This new procedure room gives the department flexibility when scheduling patient cases and it allows Stanford Health Care to meet the growing demands for interventional procedures.
