New image and identity

This 840,000 SF replacement hospital presented a unique opportunity to create a new image and identity for one of Denver’s premier healthcare institutions. Partnering with Davis Partnership Architects in a Joint Venture for core and shell design, and ZGF Architects for programming and conceptual planning, our role included healthcare planning and design. The charge for this project was to design a modern and efficient new hospital on the historic campus of Saint Joseph Hospital. With a multi-phased approach, design and construction took only 42 months in a very tight urban environment.

Enhanced operations

The hospital was planned and designed around enhancing operations: increasing efficiency, lowering costs, and bettering results in patient care. Maximizing natural light and using hazard-free building naterials, we generated a smaller environment footprint; while 365 single-occupancy patient rooms throughout the facility create an environment for family-centered care.

The epicenter of the new facility is the integrated interventional platform on the 2nd floor, which has 28 rooms, including 16 general operating rooms, a neuro OR, catheter labs, and endoscopy procedure areas. Locating nearly all areas for invasive procedures on the same floor allows shared support and pre-/post-operative areas and better staff coordination. Two hybrid operating/radiology rooms also create a specialty cardiology expertise center offering state-of-the-art equipment.

A model for health and healing in an urban community

As a model for urban health and healing community, the campus provides connections to healthy lifestyles by engaging the surrounding neighborhoods. Area residents and visitors can walk or bike through landscaped walkways and plazas to open spaces that provide relief within the urban environment. Holistically, the campus promotes health and healing for people, the earth, and the community, and allow Saint Joseph to continue their commitment to high-quality, compassionate medical care for all those who call the Mile High City home.
