Modern design meets tradition: a new era of student living

This project, located at the University of Kansas, marks a pivotal transformation in the landscape of Daisy Hill by seamlessly blending the charm of its 1960s-era residence halls with a bold and modern architectural approach. At the heart of this development is a focus on enhancing student life by creating a community-oriented, supportive, and dynamic space. The construction of two 350-bed residence halls, connected by a three-story commons building, offers a perfect blend of traditional design and contemporary functionality.

Creating a hub for academic and social success

The new quad, designed to invite socialization and recreation, serves as a gathering place that fosters a sense of belonging among students.  What was once an isolating parking lot has been transformed into an integrated, vibrant campus space. The positioning of the commons building, perched on Daisy Hill’s highest point, offers breathtaking views of the university campus, creating an inspiring setting for study, collaboration, and relaxation.

Inside the commons, students benefit from a wealth of resources that provide intellectual stimulation, leisure, comfort and a sense of community. Examples of the amenities for both group activities and individual needs include:

  • An academic resource center and classroom
  • Collaboration spaces and recreational areas
  • A coffee shop and convenience store
  • Community kitchen and multi-functional areas

Thoughtful design and planning

Our approach to the Self & Oswald Halls project was driven by research and analysis. The dramatic changes in elevation and existing utilities on the site presented unique challenges, which we addressed with innovative design solutions. The building massing respects the existing context, carefully considering the proportions and materiality of the surrounding residence halls. This thoughtful planning ensures that the new structures harmonize with the existing architecture, preserving the historical and cultural fabric of Daisy Hill.

With its careful integration of diverse living spaces and amenities, this project has not only modernized the physical environment of Daisy Hill but also enriched the student experience, creating a vibrant, supportive, and interconnected community where students can thrive both academically and socially. The attention to detail in design and respect for the site’s history makes this development a standout feature in the university’s ongoing commitment to fostering student success.
