Rapid design and innovation

With the upcoming launch of a new product, Terumo Blood & Cell Technologies was in need of a new medical device manufacturing facility. The successful entrance of this new product to the market was in part dependent on the speed of design and construction of the tenant improvement of their facility and our team readily accepted the challenge.

I first met Ariel Madlambayan… when [Treanor] was selected as the architect for a new 170,000 SF medical device manufacturing facility project… They provided expertise and project leadership that proved critical to the success of the project.

People and processes, the balance of the cleanroom design

Our team worked with Terumo BCT stakeholders to evaluate their existing workflow and look for ways to optimize the flow of raw material through finished product. The fast-paced yet meticulous planning, design, and MEP coordination were necessary to bring the design of the ISO-8 manufacturing cleanrooms to realization. The cleanroom manufacturing space, one of the largest in Colorado, is roughly half of the 170,000 SF facility. The other half of this facility is comprised of a mixture of offices, warehousing, and employee amenity spaces.

Beyond creating an efficient manufacturing environment, our team was charged with creating an employee-friendly environment. Cleanrooms are traditionally known for being sterile environments, due to environmental contamination regulations and procedures. To counter the coldness of the manufacturing space, the design of employee spaces emphasized flexible and efficient environments that supported a wide range of progressive work methods and incorporated Terumo standards and culture. Daylighting and the use of glass throughout the facility allow for transparency and natural light while also showcasing the manufacturing space.

The design needed to cover a range of requirements….  The facility also would contain all the necessary utilities required to support a highly automated production line and the associated cleanrooms….. [Treanor] hit the mark on all the requirements. They worked closely with me and the Terumo BCT Automation Engineering and Manufacturing groups to integrate the flow of manufacturing with the day-to-day operation of the support functions. The final design resulted in a superb facility supporting a business-critical product launch.
