Re-imagined school focused on early and integrated career exploration

To support students’ career development journey, Weld County School District RE-5J passed a bond to restructure its school facilities. After building a new high school focused on career concentration, the existing high school in Johnstown, Colorado, was converted into a middle school that empowers students with the understanding, experience, and confidence to support their future vocations.

To thoughtfully integrate these programs, our design team guided district stakeholders and community members through a strategic planning process. The result created an appropriate addition/renovation balance, aligning with the community’s career exploration goals for middle school students.

Demolition of existing central components made way for a new entry, administration area, and dining commons that increase connectivity and natural daylight. Supported by the core classrooms, this new central hub relocates career and technical education (CTE) programs to high-visibility areas. This provides students with a hands-on connection to classroom knowledge and educational principles. The hub visually celebrates these programs for students, as well as the community that will share centralized spaces for public functions.

Where our dreams take flight, futures are forged, and our community becomes brighter.
