Craniofacial 3D Printing Lab
Implants to repair and reconstruct facial structures
UCSF had some capabilities to create craniofacial implants to repair skull bone defects and reconstruct facial structure, but when UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland wanted to recruit a new team for their facility, they chose to create a new craniofacial lab adjacent to the surgery department.

Specialized tools and collaboration
The completed lab includes a collaborative office space, many specialized tools and work benches required to 3D print and refine implants, as well as display shelving for research and funding efforts.

Important adjacencies
Surgery can be traumatic for anyone, but can be especially scary for children. The close proximity of the new 3D craniofacial lab to surgery as well as central sterile processing, for sterilization of implants, allows adjustments to be made quickly during surgery if an implant isn’t working. This avoids future surgeries, saving families and their children from additional stress.
