Pi Beta Phi Sorority at the University of Georgia
Honoring tradition, elevating student life
For generations, the Pi Beta Phi chapter at the University of Georgia has been a cornerstone of connection, leadership, and lifelong friendship. But as student life evolved, the chapter’s historic home needed to evolve with it. The sorority wanted a modern, functional space that could better support the daily rhythms of student life while preserving the charm and tradition that make Greek housing on UGA’s campus so iconic.
Treanor partnered with Pi Beta Phi to reimagine their home for a new era of living-learning. The design team worked closely with chapter members, alumnae, and university stakeholders to deeply understand how the house could better support academic success, social connection, and personal growth. The result: a renewed, welcoming home that celebrates history while embracing the future of student success and residence life.
Expanding space for modern off-campus living
The renovation and addition redefined what it means to live and learn together. The existing plan was creatively reconfigured to maximize function and flow turning every square foot into a meaningful experience for members. The previously separate dining and chapter rooms were combined into one flexible space, increasing capacity and creating opportunities for gatherings that strengthen community.
To meet the needs of today’s students, Treanor designed a new serving area and a 24-hour kitchen because real student life doesn’t happen on a schedule. A thoughtfully designed addition expanded the main level, adding a larger living room and study spaces that welcome both in-house and out-of-house members. These spaces reflect a deep understanding of how the modern sorority experience blends social connection and academic focus a true living-learning environment that supports student success.
On the exterior, the design honors the home’s Greek Revival heritage while subtly elevating its presence. The front porch was reconstructed with new columns, a refined pediment, and gracious stairs restoring its iconic collegiate character. In back, a new sundeck extends the living experience outdoors, offering a place for connection, reflection, and community under the Georgia sun.
Thoughtful design, data-driven decisions
Behind every beautiful space is a thoughtful process. Treanor’s approach to higher education architecture is rooted in research, analysis, and conversation. Our team provided data-driven insights to inform design decisions from how members move through shared spaces to how study environments impact focus and well-being. We connected with end users at every step, facilitating collaboration and ensuring that every design move served a real purpose.
We also helped Pi Beta Phi make the most of their investment, balancing tradition with innovation to create spaces that work hard for every member. Every design choice from the layout of the dining area to the placement of daylight-filled study zones was made with intention, to enhance both daily life and long-term sustainability.
More than a house: a hub for connection and growth
The Pi Beta Phi house is more than a residence it’s a living, breathing part of the University of Georgia community. It’s where friendships are formed, leadership is learned, and memories are made. By expanding and reimagining the space, the chapter now has a home that fosters both personal and academic growth, reflecting the evolving goals of higher education and residence life.
This project reinforces Treanor’s commitment to planning for student success. It shows how thoughtful design can strengthen community, promote well-being, and respect the traditions that define campus life. By blending old and new, the Pi Beta Phi Sorority House at the University of Georgia stands as a testament to what’s possible when design honors history while looking forward, an inspiring model for living-learning spaces that empower the next generation of leaders.
