Revitalizing tradition and enhancing student life at Pi Beta Phi

When the Pi Beta Phi chapter at the University of Missouri set out to expand and modernize its sorority house, the goal was clear: honor the house’s rich history while providing amenities that meet the needs of today’s members. Situated in a prominent area of the university’s Greek Town, the Pi Beta Phi house is a Georgian revival style building that dates back to 1930. However, additions made in 1957 and 1971 had fallen out of alignment with the house’s original design and no longer served the growing membership effectively.

With the recent surge in Greek life membership and other sororities and fraternities renovating or building new houses, Pi Beta Phi faced the challenge of creating a space that would maintain its competitive appeal and offer the updated features students desired. Our team was entrusted with designing an addition and carrying out major renovations that would provide members with the perfect balance of tradition, function, and modernity.

Design solutions: a seamless blend of old and new

To make sure the new addition respects the historic integrity of the original 1930 house, our team selected a matching brick to create a seamless transition. The previous additions from 1957 and 1971, which detracted from the house’s style, were removed to make way for an 11,990-square-foot expansion. The new addition was thoughtfully designed to appear as though it had always been a part of the sorority house, preserving the character and charm that Pi Beta Phi members hold dear.

A key element of the project was relocating and expanding the dining room to the new addition, providing a spacious area that can accommodate both dining and study needs. The new design allows this versatile space to double as the venue for the chapter’s weekly meetings. The addition also features a commercial kitchen and a serving area, allowing the chapter to host large events with ease. Adjacent to the dining room, an outdoor courtyard was added to create a picturesque space for members to dine and socialize in a relaxed setting.

The expansion also introduced a top-floor sundeck and a patio near the front of the house, offering additional outdoor spaces for relaxation and gatherings. A new laundry room and additional bedrooms were included, increasing the chapter’s capacity and providing an opportunity to generate additional revenue.

Interior spaces that promote comfort, convenience, and academic success

With the relocation of several services to the new addition, the original house could be reimagined to better serve the chapter’s needs. The renovation introduced a new 24/7 kitchen exclusively for live-in members, enhancing their convenience and sense of home. Inside, the addition of a TV lounge and new offices for chapter officers created designated spaces for relaxation and leadership activities.

To support members academically and professionally, the design includes test and interview rooms as well as a workroom equipped with a printer and ample storage. A conference room provides a space for members to collaborate and plan chapter initiatives, fostering an environment of leadership and engagement. The updated finishes throughout the house create a cohesive and refreshed look that honors the house’s history while embracing a contemporary aesthetic.

The importance of preserving tradition and building community

The transformation of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority House was not just about adding square footage; it was about creating a space that aligns with the values and goals of the chapter. The new and improved house reflects Pi Beta Phi’s commitment to sisterhood, leadership, and personal growth, offering an environment where members can thrive academically, socially, and professionally. The enhanced amenities, versatile spaces, and additional capacity position Pi Beta Phi as a competitive option within Greek Town, helping the chapter continue to attract new members and strengthen its legacy.
